The early closing question is exercising the minds of local shopkeepers at present. In all probability 10 o’clock will be decided upon as the closing hour on Saturday nights. In order to keep within the 52 hours per week pro vided by the Act a concession of one hour would have to be made during the one other day in order to keep the shops open till ten o’clock on Saturday. This could be met by closing at noon instead ot 1 p.m. on Wednesday, the statutory half-holiday. The subject is being discussed by the storekeepers and in due time their decision will be presented to the Council, who will forward the .same to be gazetted. The unfair competition by local Chinese storekeepers who are retailing goods other than fruit every night in the week should be stopped. We hope the question will be satisfactorily settled in the course of a few days.
