FISHING EXCURSION.
|By Kowhai,]
A part} r organised by Messrs Austin, Gray and Clemett journeyed over the bar yesterday. On arrival at the heads the skipper, Mr F. Lawton, thought it advisable to land the ladies and children, as it was a little rough outside. Outside the anchor was dropped and a sweepstake was about to be made as to who would catch the first fish. A shout from the stern of the vessel, however, apprised the party of the fact that Messrs Collins and Gardner were already having an exciting struggle with two fine schnapper. Mr Collins hauled in his fish 5 secs before Gardner, Messrs O. Austin, G. Gray. F. Lawton, and W. Gray landed one each in the order named. It was then decided to shift further up the beach, but the change was not advantageous. Altogether 14 fine schnapper were, caught, Collins and Gardner dividing honours with 2 each. On returning to the river the party partook of afternoon tea, provided by Mrs Gray and Miss McMillan, which was done full justice to by all.
