SUPPOSED FOUL PLAY.

Dunedin, January 3. An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of Robert Francis Smith, seaman of H.M.S. Pioneer, whose body was found in the harbour on December 20. At the former inquiry the medical evidence showed that the man had apparently died from the effects of blows on the head by some blunt instrument. After further evidence, the jury returned a verdict to the effect that death had been caused by injuries to the head, but there was not sufficient evidence to show how these injuries had been received.
