UNHAPPY RUSSIA.
St. Petersburg, Jan. 3. Nicholas Schmidt, owner of an art furniture factory at Moscow, is undergoing trial for conspiracy against the Czar. The prosecution is based on a confession made after torture and enforced sleeplessness for a week. The confession was subsequently retracted. London, Jan, 3. Reuter reports that General Von der l.auii.tra, prefect of St. Petersburg, has’’ been found assassinated. Another report slates that he was shot dedd during the consecration _of a ngf,' building.
