SAD DROWNING FATALITY.
Maeton. Jan. i. Yesterday afternoon a drowning accident occurred in the Rangitikei river. A party of children were bathing, when Mr W. Marshall s eldest daughter, aged 13 years, and Mr Charles Swainson’s eldest son, aged 10 years, got into a deep hole and were drowned. Miss Gillet made a plucky attempt to rescue the children. She was however obliged to return in an exhausted condition. The'parents of the two children are well-known settlers. At the inquest a verdict of accidental drowning was returned, and the jury commended Miss Gillett’s plucky effort in trying to save the children.
