The local Chamber of Commerce received the i olio wing letter from the Department of Lairds and Survey, in reply re ,4he flooding of the Manawatu river, as follows : Sir.—ln reply to your letter of the 10th November, the Minister 'of Lands has arranged with the Hon. Minister for Public Works that his department shall undertake the engineering survey ip connection with the flooding of the Manawatu river, and also to make a special report on the question on the blocking of the river owing to the sand drifting

into it from the heads to the Whirokino bridge. The officer detailed for this work, Mr Hay, has, 1 understand, started this engineering survey, and as soon as his report is to hand, the matter will be considered by the Government.—l have the honour to be etc,
