Sanitary matters are in a scandalous condition in Foxtou, and to make matters worse the contractor has been laid aside by an accident. The Inspector of nuisances has given several people permission to honeycomb their premises with all kinds of germs. The Inspector of Nuisances gave permission that nightsoil could be buried at a depth of not less than 3 feet. This stipulation is not in the best interests of health. To get rid of the filth quickly and effectually it should be spread and lightly covered with soil almost on the surface.

Four renewals for old age pensions were granted by Ihe Magistrate yesterday.

A fire at Mangaweka on Sunday destroyed the premises of Donald Munro and Meyers and Sinclair’s stables. Mr William Parker Smith died at his residence Palmerston N. on Saturday. Deceased was 58 years old.

The Palmerston N. Friendly Society’s Sports will be hell at Foxton on New Year’s Day. in prize money will be given away and there will be special attractions such as a baby show and guessing competitions for the ladies. The catering will be in the capable hands of Messrs Langley Bros. A brass band will discourse music during the day.

Mr David Robertson, who has just returned from a tour of the world (says the “Evening Post”) was greatly impressed with the possibilities of the future before Vancouver. Speaking at a welcome tendered to him on Tuesday evening, Mr Robinson threw out a straight tip as follows: —“If I was a young fellow and wanted to go away and start in a new country, I would go straight to Vancouver, which is a city that will be heard a great deal of in the near future.” In the course of his meeting at Onehunga, Mr Massey said “that a true liberal would never put forward such land proposals, and a statesman would be ashamed of them.” A voice interruped, “ Old Seddon wouldn’t, and he was a better statesman than you.” Mr Massey rejoined, “ I can always tell when I am getting on to the sore spot.” “You struck a sore spot last election,” said his interrupter. “So will you next Friday,” conclusively added Mr Massey. And he did.

At the meeting of Manawatu licensing Committee at Marton there were present: Messrs W. G. Riddell (chairman), Simpson, Bowater, Perry, Murdoch and Wilson. A letter was received from the Health Depatment re inspection of hotels. Resolved — “ That the department be communicated with and asked to report on same at the annual meeting in June next the way suggested.” Transfer was granted from Mrs Francis Haywood, Whyte’s Hotel, Foxton,to Mr J. Hall.

The Town Clerk applied for an increase of salary at last night’s council meeting. With one exception councillors expressed themselves in favour of the request. In our next issue we will publish the salaries paid to Town Clerks in boroughs the same size as Foxton and the duties of such officers. It will be of educational value to the Council. We have previously pointed out that our Town Clerk was underpaid and are glad to know that the majority of Councillors endorse our opinion.
