The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1906. SYNDICATES AND POLITICIANS.
Prominent Diberal politicians are to be envied, says the Masterton Times. During their day of power, When not engaged in the business of the colony, they have been wont to foster syndicates of various kinds from which very considerable fortunes have been realised. This, we take it, is the meaning of Mr Massey’s question the other day, when he asked Mr McNab whether he had been a member of a land syndicate ? We, ourselves, have no knowledge as to what Mr McNab's answer is likely to be. If it be “no,” Mr Massey has placed himrelf in a somewhat ridiculous position. On the other hand, if it be “yes,” all that can be said is that a syndicate’s field of operation is not the best training ground for a Minister of Lands (or a Liberal member of Parliament either), although his connection with |it may have not the slightest bearing upon his public . duties as a parliamentarian. It would be better, if Mr Massey possessses specific information concerning Liberal land rings, if he were to speak right out. We hear rumours of fortunes ranging from twenty to ae hundred thousand pounds having been realised by prominent politicians, but persons like Mr Massey, who are in a better position than we are, to verify such tales, would do well to speak straight out. There is a good deal of iuue"do in the atmosphere, but very little in the way of tangible information.
