TENNIS.

[By N.8.0.K.]

The return cup match with Otaki has been abandoned owing to Foxton being unable to get a team away on account of various circumstances. This is to be regretted, but it is to be hoped that a friendly game will be arranged before the season finishes.

There is no doubt local players are taking note of their tailings since the Otaki match was played, as I noticed on a recent visit to the courts several members exercising #as to method ot play, etc. is a good thing, as it is only studying not only outside players, but the rules, that members can hope to be efficient. Talking of rules, I understand the secretary is able to supply copies at a cost of one shilling to those wanting same. Entries are now wanted for the following handicap events, viz.: Men’s singles, ladies' singles and combined. Will members hand their names in as quickly as possible to the secretary. I now give a few more hints and rules which should prove useful. It is a fault if the ball does not drop within the service line, or if it touch the server’s partner, or anything that he carries or wears. If however, the ball in service strike either the striker out or his partner, the server wins the stroke. If a player throws his racquet at the ball and so returns the ball into the proper court he loses the stroke. Be kind to the umpire ; you might do worse than he if in his place. In doubles or combined doubles the player with the weakest backhand should play on the right-hand side of the court. Beginners are reminded that six games go to a set as usually played.
