SPORTING.

1 By Early Bird.]

The Fielding Club maintained its reputation for fair dividends at last week’s meeting, few favourites surviving. An increase of over ,£SOOO was recorded in totalisator receipts as compared with last year.

If the official times can be taken as correct, Ballarat must be counted lucky in winning the opening six-furlong event, as Lord Soult got a particularly rough passage in the earlier stages of the race and then showed a lot of pace in the straight, finishing close up third. The second day he hopped off the mark smartly and gave nothing else a chance, being credited with cutting out the six in 1.13 2-5 secs. —lt took Ballarat 1.15 the previous day. Lord Soult, Kai Enin, Frobisher and Furneaux, left for Woodville this morning. The wet going should suit Soult, while Kai Erriu should run a good race on Feilding form. Will he repeat that form ? Dr Bennet has decided to put both Bureaux and Frobisher up at auction at Woodville to-morrow.

I understand Tony Messina leaves for Woodville to-morrow with representatives for Woodville’s second day’s racing. Several good commissions worked from Feilding last week with outside metellicians missed the mark, and the bookies smile again. In two cases both horses fell, while thirds and fourths were the nearest the “ hot things ” could register. Billy Young, who is recognised as the best hurdle horseman in the country, was very lucky he was not hurt when he lost his seat off Rosegrove at Feilding. He was dragged along for over a chain with one foot in the stirrup-iron and finally freed himself unscathed. As a matter of fact he rode Taupo second in the following race, his mount paying ,£ll 5s dividend. Opinions differ as to whether Opiti would have defeated Mahoe at Feilding had the latter stood up. However, they will probably meet at Palmerston shortly, when the contest should be interesting. The Feilding Jockey Club are to be commended for effecting many improvements since last meeting. The Tea Kiosk over the artificial lake, extended stand accommodation, and general public conveniences all bespeak the progressive nature of the stewards, who give unmistakable evidence of catering for patrons. The excellence or the luncheon provided by Mr Geo. Langley was highly commented upon. Horses competing In the Hack Scurry at Feilding which should win good races shortly are Ducalion, by Nelson, a fine muscular chestnut, and Lady Nell, who ran second to Moral the first day. By the way, Moral, on Feilding form, should prove a particularly good one during the Christmas carnival.
