MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The annual meeting of the above was held in the County office, Sandon, yesterday. Present. —Crs Masters, R. B. McKenzie, Kendall, Barber, Hammond, and J. G. Wilson. Cr. J. G. Wilson was unanimously elected chairman. The tramway manager reported as follows: For the past two months the bulk of traffic had been inward, and at present they are dealing with wool in satisfactory quantities. The inward and outward freights are well balanced, returns showing a decided improvement. The number of bales of wool to be dealt with at Pukenui are expected to show a large increase over any pievious years. The Feilding merchants are also taking much more advantage of the trams than formerly. Tramway receipts : —Wharfage, ißs 8d; schooner, 13s gd ; railway, 6s 2d; trams, ,£134 19s 6d.
Thirty-five applications were received for the position of County Clerk.
From Valuation Department, stating that £827 6s, advanced on account of subsidy to the Council would be paid in a few days. From Glen Oroua Dairy Company, asking for 80 yards of road metal. From the Treasurer, asking payment of £949 19s interest for half-year, ending 31st January. From F. W. Hopper, offering to supply 400 gallon tank for the Shannon Ferry. From Lands Department, asking if the protective works at Ohakca, for which a subsidy of £2 for £1 had been granted, had been commenced. —Mr Purnell reported that the works were in a forward condition, but the amount granted was not sufficient, and another £6O had been applied for.
Prom E. Woolfenden, secretary Motor-car Association, asking the Council to send a delegate to a meeting to he held at Palmerston on 12th December to consider the advisability of framing uniform by-laws for the whole colony for motor traffic. Prom the Department of Hoads pointing out that when it was proposed to close roads and exchange them for other lands, the written consent of the local authority and other parties interested would first have to be obtained.
Prom Treasury, stating that £2OO for the construction of Pike’s road, and £IOO for McDonald’s road encroachment work had been paid to the credit of the Council.
Prom the Roads Department, asking the Council whether they agreed to the proposals of the Horowhenua Council for the erection of a bridge at Shannon, and if not, suggesting that the reasons should be fully filed as soon as possible. W. A. D’Oridant, offering to work Scott’s Ferry for what he could make out of it.
, From R. Barber, placing under offer to tke Council land for the Shannon Ferry road deviation at £2O an acre. From Clerk, Executive Council, stating that African boxthorn had been declared a noxious weed.
From the Paymaster-General, stating that £9 7s 6d, on account of tram, had been paid to the Council’s account. From the District Engineer, directing attention to the need of repairs to a bridge on the Himitangi-Bulls tram. From the Roads Department, forwarding a copy of the proposed Motor By-laws. . General account, debit, 00 7s id; loan account, credit, £l9*l 18s gd; net debit, 8s 4d. Riding accounts : Sandon, is 8d; Waitohi, 7s lod ; Rongotea, 15s 2d ; Carnarnon, is 4d ; Wirokino, os 3d. Over expenditure Mt. Stewart, 16s 6d; Kawakawa, 14s; Awahou, 17s 6d.
