Mr Donald McPhee, who has resided in the Wairarapa district for fifty years died at Gladstone Thursday, aged seventy-nine years. Deceased was at Bendigo at the time of the Eureka Stockade, and later took part in Gabriel’s Gully and Blue Mountain gold-field rushes.

Messrs Mounsey & Co will sell by auction under instructions from Mrs Whyte, at the premises opposite railway station, on Wednesday 28th November, furniture etc. The list appears in another column.

The services in the Methodist Church on Sunday will be conducted, in the iriorning by Mr W. Harris, and evening by Rev. J. Southern. The subject for the evening will be “ Was Jesus Mad.” During the day the choir will render the anthems “ Praise the Lord” and “Jubilate Deo.”

The subsidy system in connection with the sale of goods is on similar lines to the universal pension which will probably become law within a short period in New Zealand. For every 5s deposited by the intending purchaser, the merchant forwards him a coupon or order for 6s, and this amount is payable in goods of any kind! stocked by the merchant. Mr Kelly happening to come along at the time, together with his son and Master Prew, got into a small boat and tugged the punt down to the wharf, where a line was thrown out and the punt made secure.
