The Opposition has decided to nominate Mr F. W. Tang exM. H. R. for Waikato, for the Manakan seat, rendered vacant by the death of Mr Kirkbride. Mr S. Cochrane Mackey, of Devonport, has intimated his intention of contesting the seat as an Independent candidate. He gives his platform as that of the Empire Tariff Reform Teague, formed in the interests of the farmers and export producers of the colony. Mr J. T. Stemdridge, of Ararimu South, is suggested as a likely candidate in the Government interests, and the name of Mr G. Hutchison, at present of Auckland, and some years ago member for Patea, has also been mentioned as a probable candidate. Amongst others who have been mentiond as possible candidates in the Government interest are Messrs J. Rowe and D. Sutherland, ofOnehunga.

Domestic servants in Berlin are profiting by an abnormal scarcity in the supply in order to exact much better terras all round. The Dondon “Evening Standard’s” correspondent, sends an amusing account of the system of engagement. A kind of public market is opened for two or three hours daily, at which the mistresses of households appear in person and bargain with the girls, who are using their advantage to exercise a very strict selection of employers. The system is very like that which prevails at the ordinary Scotch “feeing fairs.” Some of the German mistresses have suffered the experience of the farmer who, at one of these fairs, bargained with a lad for his services. The boy had no written character with him, but he promised to return in the afternoon, provided with one, and if it proved satisfactory the engagement was to be concluded. “Well my man,” said the farmer, meeting him later in the day, “have ye gotten your character?” “No,” was the reply “but I’ve gotten yours, and I’m no coming!”

On arrival at home I immediately took a dose of your RHEUMO. repeating same every four hours. The pain soon left, and in the morning I came down to business as usual.
