CONTINUATION OF WHYTE STREET
We Eave ascertained the approxi mate cost of the proposed continua tion of Whyte-street to Jonson
street, and we believe our readers will find the figures fairly accurate. It will demonstrate the sacrifice that Messrs Easton and Austin are prepared to make in opening up this important thoroughfare. We do not think, however, that the Council should call upon them to bear any proportion ot the cost of adverting the creek which is not on their property- In sub mitting these figures to our readers we are not holding any brief for Messrs Easton and Austin, neithei have we spoken to them on the subject, but we say this finally, that if the Council allow the opportunity slip ■ of completing this thoroughfare they will be doing a grave injustice to the ratepayers. The cost to Messrs Easton and Austin will be as follows:—12 square chains of land (r acre 2 chains), kerbing footpaths, 4,800 ft. heart of totara (or concrete), ; forming and metalling footpaths with 3 inch screened gravel, 10ft. wide, 2s; forming and metalling 12 chains, 46ft, wide (metalling 12ft.), 10s ; blocks for kerbing if timber used. £2 16s; labour for kerbing, £s > nails and spikes, is ; carting, £1 10s. Total, Bs. The cost to the Borough would be the erection of a 30ft. culvert, giving ample room for two carts to pass, say The amount the Council would be called upon to expend would in a short space of time be repaid by increased rates. We hope the Council will see the wisdom of dealing definitely with the matter at its next meeting.
