DEATH IN PRISON.

Auckland, Nov.- 2

At the inquest on the body of Alexander Crawford, an ex-police-man, who was arrested for drunkenness on Tuesday, and died in Mount Eden Gaol yesterday, the evidence showed that Crawford was found in a state of hopeless intoxication and was committed for medical treatment. Gaoler Severne said he thought it a shame that a respectable man like Crawford was sent to prison for treatment ; he was violent, but required nothing more than ordinary medical treatment. He did not blame the police, but the system of sending people to gaol for medical treatment. The medical evidence was to the effect that death was caused by pneumonia and complications. The arresting constable stated that Crawford was very violent when arrested and it took three men to hold him to prevent him from injuring himself. The jury retimred a verdict according to the medical evidence, with a rider expressing the decided opinion that Crawford should not have been remanded to gaol. They were satisfied that everything possible was done for him there, but the facilities for treatment were not such as the case demanded.
