A GOOD SUGGESTION.

| to the editor.]

Sir. —l noticed two items of news in your last issue, viz., one that a young man while under theinfluence of drink had infringed the law in a Chinaman’s shop, and the other referred to the formation of a club at Foxton. Now’sir, there are between three and four hundred flaxmill employees in this district. 1 After working hard all the week they look for a little relaxation on Saturday nights. They come into Foxton and what happens. The only places that offer them any hospitality are the pubs, and billiard rooms. They start to sholit and finally get more liquor than is good for them, waste their money, and end up by making fools of themselves. When' sober they are as fine a lot of young cha|)s as one .could wish to, but when' under the influence of liquor there is a big percentage of the deyil in them. What I would suggest is that a club be formed for these young fellows where they can have'a game of billiards or cards, or retire into a reading room containing all thelatest.magaziuesj, etc., and otherwise feel at home. Also a banking account be opened for each member, so that instead of pouring his hard-earned money down his .own. throat and the throats of his pals, he can accumulate and invest it to a better purpose. I hope, sir, that some one more able thanmyself will take this matter up and knock it into practical shape. Could not a meeting be. called some Saturday, night ; be {discussed by r the) chaps? I am, etc.,

Scutcher.
