lb® Case of Ann Foster.

Oct. 31 • At the Supreme Court this morning, Ann Foster, who was convicted of manslaughter on August 10th last, in that her neglect had determined the death of her daughter’s illegitimate child, came up for setitence. In passing the sentence, his Honour said when accused was befora the jury he instructed them not to find her guilty merely for neglect, but only to bring in such a verdict if shey found her guilty of wicked neglect. It was his duty to pass such a sentence as would serve as a warning to other people, that if they neglected ,children in the way accused had done they must be subjected to severe punishment. It was his duty to pass a sentence' which would be a warning to all who were inclined t'p neglect an unwelcomechild as, the accused had done. !He was sori-jr to treat her severely, but he could not conscientiously treat her more leniently. The accused would be sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
