I began to suffer with dyspepsia about this time, which soon became so acute . that I was in tortures, day and night. I could keep nothing on my stomach, every meal was followed by violent retching, and a dry hard cough that settled on my chest nearly shook me to pieces, and often kept me awake half through the night. There were pains all over ray body, and I was a bundle of nerves, startmgat a sound. Extreme debility added to my distress, and I soon became a prey to melancholy. I was at tended by some ot the cleverest doctors in the country, but they failed to relieve me in the least. “ Through sheer weakness I became subject to fainting fits, and have had as many as ten in one day. .1 could not sleep, and night after night I have walked the room until I fell in a swoon from utter exhaustion.- “ It was at this time the doctor said' I could not live beyond six months, and, indeed, everything pointed that way.
