ENTRE NOUS.

[by SARAH JANE.] Dear Mr Editor.—l shall be pleased if you will find space in your valuable paper in order to allow me.to devote a few lines occasionally that may interest my fair sisters. So much room is taken up in newspapers in regard to affairs which we women folk are not at all interested about that I think in fairness we should be allowed a little space in which to air our gossip. We have lots of things to talk about. Our days at home are just lovely, and the spicy little bits one hears, oh, Mr Editor, it would do you good to get behind the scenes. The other day I attended an at home and the conversation turned upon a certain lady. One of our prim and proper society leaders, who always does things on the strict conventional lines, had been leading the conversation, when a knock was heard and behold, the much discussed one appeared and the first to give her a most cordial greeting was Madam Duplicity. Do you men so conduct yourselves ? Such cruel hypocricy is enough to make one feel ashamed of one’s sex. Mr dear sisters, the tongue is truly an unruly member —but the true gentlewoman ktiows how to curb it.

What did you think of “our girls ” at the recent opening of the boating season ? I felt quite proud .of them. I hope the club will not allow the regatta programme to be drawn up without including two female events. I must congratulate the , Misses Collins on their well-deserved win, and also Mrs Clemett and Miss McMillan and the others who competed. Now. sir, don’t you really think the opening would have fallen flat but for our fair competitors ? Of course you do! The Girls Guild Bazaar is looming ahead and much hard work has already been done, I am sure it will be a great surprise to the public who must come along and expect to spend a lot of money. I hope our young men will deny themselves cigarettes in order to liberally patronise some very novel side attractions. Miss Bennett and Mrs Stewart, two of our most enthusiastic workers, are sparing no pains to ensure the bazaar being a success. I hear that a pretty dialogue will also be produced. But perhaps you know more about that Mr Editor than I do. The cookery competition is a splendid idea and should be.keenly competed. _ Oh, that I were judge and privileged to eat small pieces of the goodies. But perchance they will send you some of the exhibits and you will not forget Sarah Jane! I am sure we shall all be extremely sorry to lo£e Miss Bennett from our midst. It is a pleasure to know that she will not be removed very far from us and I hope she will often pay Foxton a visiL One of our local young ladies is shortly to be conducted to the hymenial altar. But I must not say too much about this at present. Mrs and Miss Haywood are shortly to take their departure and I understand they will cross the Tasman sea before settling down in our colony again. They will carry away with them many pleasant memories of Foxton. Quite a number of families have arrived here within the past few months. It is quite a pleasure to meet fresh faces and make new acquaintances. We were quite a long, time without any arrivals but now the round ot visiting is getting quite large. I think it is quite refreshing to exchange ideas with the newcomers. I don’t know whether I have exceeded my limits this time, so for the present, au revoir.
