The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1906. A NEW STREET.

Messrs Easton and Austin approached the Borough Council recently in reference to opening a road through their property to connect Whyte and Jonson Streets. The road at present goes as far as the public hall and and its continuation to Jonson Street would be a great public convenience. To junction with Jonson Street, however, a culvert would have to be put down across the big drain. Messrs Easton and Austin are to be commended for their public spirited action although the fact must not be overlooked that the thoroughfare would greatly enhance the value of their property as it would give access to some of the best building sites in the town. At the special meeting of the Council to discuss the question the following conditions were laid down: “ That the footpaths be the same width as in Whyte-street, kerbed with concrete 12x6 ortotara 12x3, covered with ain of fine gravel. The road to be formed 46ft wide with a

crown of ißin including metal. The metal to be 12ft wide and 6in thick and properly graded. A concrete culvert the same dimensions as that in the Avenue.” Mr Austin, who was present at the meeting, objected that it was ridiculous for the Council to expect Messrs Easton and Austin to carry out conditions that even the Borough were not prepared to undertake and that the road would not be constructed. Speaking from an unbiased point of view we are of opinion that the Council’s conditions are equitable, excepting perhaps the culvert of which it should bear a proportion of cost. It is only a matter ot time when the Council may find it necessary to junction Whyte and Jonson streets, and to take the land for the purpose under ‘ ‘ The Public Works Act” would be a more costly procedure than meeting Messrs Easton and Austin in part of the construction of the new street. We hope, in the interests of the town, that the matter will not be allowed to drop, but that some mutual arrangement may be agreed upon by both parties.
