The late Sir Isaac Pitman, the inventor of the famous system of shorthand, it is recalled, was an ardent advocate of spelling reform, and he published many books in which the words were phonetically printed. He also added a number of letters to the alphabet to reproduce certain sounds. But his sons who succeeded him in the business of publishers did not adopt his hobby, and, indeed, were not in sympathy with it. Mr Alfred Pitman was approached but declined to express any opinion on President Roosevelt’s action. The firm does not now publish books in reformed spelling. Some time ago Mrs Yates, of this district (says the Wairarapa “ Daily News ”) answered an advertisement in a Wellington paper, “ Wanted some kind lady to take charge of a baby boy, etc.,” and had a twelve-months-old boy left at her place by an unknown woman. It transpires that the child’s name is Richard Chin Deong, its father was a Chinaman carrying on a fruit business in Hawera, and its mother a girl who is now only seventeen. A short while back a Hawera paper drew attention to this dreadful case in its leading columns, and the police instituted enquiries. Tile Chinaman disappeared from Hawera, the mother of the girl-mother earns her living by washing, and has eight other children to keep, and the child was dumped on to the Carterton resident who replied to the advertisement, no provision being made for [ its maintenance. The child was \ brought before Mr W. P. James, S.M., and committed to the Wei-'« ling ton Receiving Home.

The local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, removed into its new and well-appointed premises last Monday. It was decided to mark the event by presenting a momento to the customer who made the first deposit in the new premises. Although secrecy was maintained by the Bank officials, the fact leaked out that a prize was to be offered. Several wended' their way to make an early deposit and, with nonchalant air, were listening for the doors to creak. Included in the group, and determined to win the trophy were Moustachio and Baretace. The alarm was given, the former receiving a special warning. The door was rushed and the two struggled gamely for the entrance. While the friendly bout proceeded an irrepressible telegrabh cadet, watching his opportunity, slipped past the strugglers and planked his deposit on the counter. He carried off the silver match box.
