The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1906. WANTED--HARBOR BOARD FOR FOXTON.
Mr. P. Hennessv has been elected President of the Foxtpn Chamber of Commerce. We commend the Chamber on its choice, and feel sure that the new President, who is an enterprising and go-ahead citizen, will help that very desirable body to carry out its progressive policy. The present Harbour arrangements are nothing more than a public scandal, and unless the Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce succeed in getting the Government to sanction the formation of a Harbor Board, a good deal of shipping will be transferred to other parts. Wharfage arrangements, at present under the control of the Railway Department, are most unsatisfactory, and the channel and bar need immediate attention. It is only a matter of a little time when Home boats will be loaded in the offing, but before this obtains great improvements will have to be effected in the channel, which will never be done so long as the Railway Department have control. Improvements can only be carried out satisfactorily under the supervision of a properly constituted harbour board. We believe Mr Hennessy and those gentlemen associated with him will stir this matter up and hitch their chariot to the harbour star. Ports like Patea and Waitara are controlled by boards and are worked on up-
to-date lines. There is alwhys something going wrong with our bar and our shipping is thus retarded, The only remedy is the constitution of a Harbour Board.
