FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Present. —B. G. Gower (Mayor), Crs Austin, Gray, Baker, Coley, Moore, Shadbolt , and Stiles. Tire minutes of the previous : meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence outward was < read and approved, and correspondence inward was dealt with as , follows: — - From the Foxton .School Com- , mittee and the Chamber of Commerce, asking Council’s permission < for the use of Library to hold their j meetings.—Granted, meetings to 1 be held not earlier than 8 p.m. _ 1 From the Secretary Municipal Association, Wellington, asking Council for a contribution of ios ( 8d towards expenses of an actuary, i re the matter of a Superannuation , Scheme.—Granted. 1 From H. R. McDonald, stating that the windmill on his lease, the Target Reserve, was not in work- 1 ing order and asking if Council \ could arrange to have same repaired.—The Clerk was instructed , to inform Mr McDonald, that according to his predecessors lease he must keep everything in repair. I From John Rogers, putting_ in i his charge (,£io) for preparing j plans for Borough Council.— . Proposed by Cr Stiles and seconded by Cr Austin that the amount be paid, Cr Shadbolt dissenting. From Levin and Co., stating ] that they are prepared to accept ] lease of part of Harbour-street, at , a rental of ,£SO a year subject to certain conditions. From Messrs Austin and Easton ' asking Council’s permission to construct a road connecting White- ( street and Johnstou-street. —Gran- { ted, the conditions of same to be ( left to a iheeting of the Council ‘ on Monday 15th October, and Messrs Austin and Easton to j attend. ; Reports. , The Overseer reportedlat length ] on work done during the month ‘ and suggested the following work be done:—That the Main-street wate-tables be cleaned out and Vic- ( toria Park be tidied up for Novem- , ber 9th, 1 The Inspector of Nuisances reported having inspected the borough during the past month ’ and declared it to be in a clean and sanitary state. Also having given , notice in several cases for yards to be cleaned up and to a Chinaman in Main-street to remove, decayed 1 fruit from his premises. 1 The treasurer reported that - since the last monthly meeting . of the Council the sum of ,£367 os lid had been paid into the District fund account. The batik balances to date were as follows: District fund account, cr. ,£llß 4s 6d; Council Chambers loan account, cr £ 75. The balances of various separate accounts were: —Library account, cr £66 6s 8d ; Reserves account, is 8d; Cemetery account, cr 13s lod ; Interest account, cr ,£157 4s nd. The General account had been overdrawn to the extent of ,£25455 3d, General. Cr Austin, speaking in reference to the Inspsctor’s report said he could not uphold his (inspector’s) statement that Foxton was in a clean and sanitary state, and he instanced a case where a person kept several cows, pigs, and a large number of ducks on a ridiculously small piece of land. Proposed by Cr Shadbolt and seconded by Cr Gray that the grass in Victoria Park be cut and the track put in order for the —CarriedProposed by Cr Baker and seconded by Cr Stiles that the Clerk ba instructed to write to the Rechabites asking if they could lend ,£2OO to Council lor completing the Council Chambers- — CarriedProposed by Cr Baker and seconded by Cr Stiles that a special meeting of the Council be held on Monday 22nd inst.at 8 p.m. to deal with the lighting of the borough.—Can iedProposed by Cr Gray and seconded by Cr Shadbolt that the Custodian be paid ,£io per annum out of the Library account. —■ Carried. . Proposed by Cr Baker and seconded by Cr Moore that tenders be invited for the leasing of the old Council building for terms of 1. 2, and 3, years tenders to be in by 7 p. m.
