The local Slate School opened yesterday after its short vacation.
A sharp frost was experienced in this district this morning. We acknowledge receipt of complimentary ticket for the forthcoming Manawatu Show. The season for trout fishing in the Wellington Acclimatisation District opened yesterday. Messrs Sutherland and Rough have two cheap buggies for sale, also mare to foal shortly, and numerous properties of every description. This firm is now acting on behalf of the A.M.P. Society in the life insurance line.
At the recent meeting of the Wanganui Presbytery, held. at Marton last Tuesday, Sept. 25th, the resignation of the Rev. Mr Speirs was accepted with regret, and in doing so the Presbytery expresse l its satisfaction at the faithful way in which Mr Speirs had carried out his work 1:1 the Foxton district.
The annual general meeting of the Foxton Cricket Club will be held in Mr M. Perreau’s refreshment rooms on Friday evening next at 8 o’clock, when the annual report and balance sheet will be read. Members and intending members are requested to be present.
Messrs Levin and Co’s tug boat “Kate” filled and sank at the wharf this morning. It appears that the boat was made too fast at the wharf at low tide, with the result that when the water rose the boat filled and sunk. A staff ot men assisted by the railway crane were busy refloating her this morning.
The Irish clergy in Killarney declined to attend the unveiling of a monument erected to the memory of the Munster Fusiliers who were killed between 1881 and 1902. Bishop Brindle, Roman Catholic Bishop of Nottingham, England, delivered an address. “Freeman’s Journal” did not publish a line regarding the ceremony.
A native named Tini Rau Ropeha was crushed to the ground in a forest at Hauturu a few days ago by a tree which he felled. Some friends of his who were working near at hand not hearing the usual sign that all was well, namely, three taps on the stump of a fallen tree with an axe, went to the spot, and found the man’s body tightly pinned down. They had to saw the tree across over his body, and before they could release him he was dead.

At the local Court this morning belore Dr Bennet J.P., Hany Bedford alias Snorkey was convicted of drunkenness in the Avenue last nieht and discharged.

We understand that Mrs Hamer has decided to personally supervise her dressmaking department at the Economic, so that the latest fashion and lit may be depended upon. Prices are cut to the lowest possible limit. Mr Hopper, while working yesterday met with a painful accident. While employed in making a tank the iron slipped and the wrist was cut almost to the bone, which will incapacitate him for a week or so. Mr J. King, who has been farming at Moutoa during the past 27 years, has disposed of his property to Mr C. Davis and has acquired a farm at Bunnythorpe whither he and his family will take up their residence. The barque Eutterworth was abandoned in Cook Strait yesterday afternoon. The Penguin rescued the crew and conveyed them to Picton. There is no likelihood of the vessel being saved. She was bound from Tiraaru to Kaipara, Mr Wesley Woolhouse the wellknown pianoforte importer repairer and tuner, desires to notify the public that all piano-tuning etc, receives his personal attention and that no agents are authorised to do this work on his behalf. He feels it necessary to make this notification by reason of certain misrepresentation. All orders left at the Herald office will receive prompt attention.
