RACING.
Meeting at Rangitikel. 4*9 By Early Bird. The Rangitikei Racing Club 'were favored with ideal weather for their Spring meeting, and as a result attendances were large and speculation was brisk. One or two bad falls were recorded in the jumping events, but taken throughout, the jumping was of a high order. Frank Lind had the misfortune to break his collarbone from a fall off Pilot in the Steeples the first day. This is the seventh time Frank has had a break of that nature. Jack Cameron still holds the record in this respect, he having had his collarbone broken on fifteen different occasions—-eleven times on one shoulder-blade and four on the other. There were some glaring instances of reversals of form at the meeting, and, as usual, different distances and weights were the arguments advanced to dear any doubt which may have arisen as to the straight-forward tactics of those concerned, A lot of Foxton money was piled on Lord Soult in the five furlongs, but he could get no nearer than fourth to Fontenoy, who can gallop fast, and who should go on winning even in better company. Young Charley Price got caught in the tapes, and as a result, the Soult pony did not leave the mark as he might have done. Kai Erran credited another loss to himself in the Maiden, He finished somewhere in the bunch, and I dpubt whether he will ever finish elsewhere in a race. He may fluke home some day, but I think it would be a better plan to try him between the shafts of a dog-cart', He may be worth his oats there but certainly is not worth persevering with for racing purposes. Dr Bennett’s Furneaux must have filled his backers with hopes when he flashed into the lead in the hack race the second day. However, it was only for the n menf as his condition failed j-here was no big dividend He should win shortly. metallicians must be a long way out of pocket over the Bulls meeting, if rumor is correct, as to several large commissions, being worked on numerous winners. BLady Beresford and Rosegrove are two prads likely to catch the judges eye in big handicaps during tlje season, while Mahoe is a hurdler worth watching. Racing at Rangitikei should throw much light on probable winners at Wanganui next week. One of Mr Laing’s charges leaves this afternoon to co mpete j at Wanganui. It is doubtful whether Alf. 1 Wright will take anything through t to Wanganui. \
