A CRUEL SPORT.
- Action Taken. Feilding, Sept. 20. At the Police Court to-day judgment was reserved in a case brought by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals against a participant in a recent pigeonshooting match for cruelty in wounding a pigeon. There was considerable levity in the proceedings. The society’s inspector admitted that he had ‘ ‘ tickled trout ” in the Old Country, though he called himself a “sport.” A witness for the prosecution, the Rev. Olphert, considered even shooting . wild pigeons for sport was cruelty, although not if the birds were wanted for food. He did not ob-. ject to the destruction of rabbits, if done painlessly. He admitted' having shot birds for food himself.
