LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY.

The Society held its us’iel fortnightly meeting last Tuesday eve ling. The chair was occupied by the Rev. H. F. Wilson. The subject f r the evening was the poet Wordsworth. Mr Wilson, who led the discussion of the meeting on the subject, dealt in a most interesting manner with the life of the great English poet, and the characteristics of his work. Wordsworth’s gentleness of mind and retiring habits, his profound love of nature, and his lofty style, were all touched upon. Several poems were read by the members, and admiration was expressed at their beautiful simplicity both of thought and of diction. The poem, “We are seven,” seemed to specially illustrate the poet’s genius for portraying the simple, ir,mcent nature ot rustic childhood. Most of the poems read seemed to deal similarly with the beauties of country life. At the next meeting of the Society the subject will be continued, and some of the more difficult of Wordsworth’s works will be studied.
