NATIVE LANDS.
Ths Unproductive Area. The return asked for by the Hon. J. D. Ormond showing the area of native land in the North Island that is unproductive has now been printed and circulated. The bare summary, which we published some time ago, is as follows : Area Total UnproducArea tive. Acres Acres Auckland 4,006,670* % 115,087 H’wk’sßay 1,420,295 472,592 Taranaki 687,549 482,710 Wellington 1,365,088 800,329 Total 7,479,602 2,870,718 about 225,300 acres barren, useless land. The summarised figures regarding the blocks over 1000 acres show the following results : Auckland—3,76B,B97 acres, of which 1,571,974 acres are under forest. There are 58,028 native owners. Hawke’s 8ay—1,108,316 acres, of which 462,781 acres are unproductive. There are 25,986 owners. Taranaki which 96,192 acres are open and 399,018 acres bush. The resident population is 280 to 300 natives and there are 8722 native owners. Of the whole area, 12,500 acres are productive and 482,700 unproductive. There are 15,000 acres suitable for sawmilling. Wellington of which 231,700 acres are milling timber. There are 10,869 owners.
