Debating Society.
At the fortnightly of Foxton Literary and Debating Society on Tuesday evening last, a debate took place as to whether “man’s greatness is the cause of his unhappiness,’’ Mr H. Frankhuul opened in the affirmative and the* Rev. H. F. Wilson replied in the negative. The subject was an interesting one. There were differences of opinion as to what “greatness” and “happiness” meant, and the issues were not as clear as could have been wished. Mr Frankland considered that man’s greatness was the cause of his unhappiness, and illustrated his argument by references to Alexander the Great, Napoleon, J. D. Rockfeller and others. The Rev. Mr Wilson argued that it was the very fact of man’s greatness that made happiness possible. Real happiness could only lie attained by the harmonious development of man’s three faculties, physical, mental and spiritual. If unhappiness ensued it was man’s failure to develop his faculties in unison. _ In support of his contention he cited Gladstone, General Gordon, Livingstone and others. The result of the vote gave a small majority in favour of the .negative. Mr E. Hill occupied the chair. The Rongotca Debating Society has challenged the local Society to a contest. The challenge will probably. be accepted, and an interesting debate between the two clubs may he looked forward to.
