Tennis.
[By N.8.0.K.] The inauguration of a ten ms column in the Manawatu Herald should prove a boon to tennis players both in Foxton and the surrounding district. There is no doubt tennis as a sport is going ahead, and the local tennis club is to be congratulated on electing such a strong committee for coining season as it has done. 1 he suggestion as to electing a match committee to control the games at all times and also to pick teams and handicap players, as well as arrange tournaments and matches is a good one, and will do a lot to make the game popular. The election of 20 new members at the annual meeting and the news that there are more to follow' should make the committee teel satisfied from a financial point of view'. There is no doubt the committee have a hard task in front of them to reduce their liabilities, but a suggestion has been made to h,.i\e a bazaar next winter, and with the proceeds pay off the debt. The first works of the new committee will be the top dressing courts and a new pavilion. IV.ih these works are urgent!}' nocuod. Another work that requires a!Action is the topping of lh-. t:oco so that the light on vise court,; ww not be so patchy. clubs they would lose their matches on foot-faults alone. The object of this column is to place before tennis players various hints as to improving their style of play, also every day rules, as well as other items of interest to those engaged in this sport. The writer would be glad to receive questions from tennis players, and to answer same through this column. One matter that should receive attention from the Tennis Club CommhTe is tint of affiliation to the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association. One of the principal benefits is that of meeting members of other affiliated clubs in friendly contest. Another benclit is that members could take part in the Caster Tournament held in Wellington, and of course take part in any authorised tournament in New Zealand or Australia, in addition to which they would be eligible to play at the EAibilion Tournament at Christchurch, at which even the iiovice is catered for. Meeting other and better players is what we want to improve our own play. In order to help the club to carry out necessary improvements immediately, I would suggest to members the advisability of remitting their annual subscriptions to the treasurer as soon as possible.
