Borough Sanitary Arrangements.
DISCUSSION IN THE * COUNCIL. At last night’s Borough Council meeting the carrying out of the borough’s sanitary arrangements came in for a good deal of discussion. There was a concensus of opinion that the present arrangements were not giving general satisfaction. The removal at the local State School being considered very unsatisfactory. Cr Coley said the School Committee should take this matter up. The pans, which were of a large size, should be emptied at least three times a week. He pointed out that the contractor had temporarily transferred the work. The contractor had informed him that it was a difficult matter to collect the money from householders. He said he had advised the contractor to sue defaulters and he felt this would be a stimulus to defaultersto pay up. Cr Sbadbolt said the Council should employ a man and do the work itself..
The Mayor said the contractor should be notified to carry out the work more satisfactorily. Cr Coley said perhaps the contractor’s horse was unequal to the work. He would, however, not see him stuck for a horse.
Or Sbadbolt again interjected: “ Its up to the Council to buy a horse and do the work themselves.”
t Another Councillor suggested ' that a sanitary rate be struck to ensure the work being done thoroughly. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Baker, it was resolved “That the nightsoil contractor be instructed to carry out his work thoroughly or the Council will not require his services.”
