SPECIAL MEETING
A special meeting of the above was held in the Library last cverfirtf; to accept tenders tor white pine timber and discuss genera! business. Present: His Worship tlic Mayor (Id; G. Gower, Esq.), and Cfs Coley, Gray, Moore, Shad bolt, FranlJand, Stiles and Baker. On the motion ot Crs Stiles and Baker, the tenders of M-ssrs King and Barringer wore accepted for the white pine timber, to be divided equally. The application of Mr Arthur Haywood to build a bulk store in Harbourstreet at the end of railway line, according to plans submitted and on condition that he protect the bank, was acceded to, on the motion of Ci Gray, seconded by Cr Frankland. The rent to be £2 ios per year, payable yearly in advance, and the term of tenure to be at the pleasure of the Council. • , . , , From K. Moore, solicitor, on behalf of Mr Edmund Osborne, asking consent of Council to a right-of-way across the north half ot section 109.—Granted. The Valuer General wrote notifying that £124 ns rod subsidy 1905-6 had been passed to the credit of the Council. Messrs Bunny, .Rawson and Potherick, solicitors, Wellington, wrote on behalf of a client re loan tor lighting, etc., and asking whether arrangements had been made for the money and if not to send details of proposed loan, security, rate of interest, provision for sinking fund, total indebtedness, raleable value, basis of assessment, population, etc.—Letter laid on the table. Messrs Levin and Co, Limited, wrote asking for a 21 years’ lease or the right to purchase that portion of the land fronting Harbour-street at the rear of the new Council Chambers for the purpose of building a grading and dumping store for hemp. Cr Baker was opposed to granting a long loose as property was increasing in value in the town. The clerk said the company were anxious to have a definite reply from the Council. It was pointed out that others were anxious to secure this section, and Cr Gray suggested that Messrs Levin and Co. be given the option to accept the lease and keep it open for a few days. On the motion of Or Stiles, seconded by Cr Baker, it was resolved “ that the application ot Messrs Levin and Go. for a leasejof area shown on plan be granted at an annual rental of £SO. provided that a 12ft right-of-way be reserved. Cr Frankland was appointed to represent the Council at the biennial conference of the Municipal Association of New Zealand. The Mayor found it inconvenient to attend. The Council then rose.
