—9 ■ — later particulars. London, August 23. A correspondent who rode from Santiago to Valparaiso estimates that two hundred thousand _ Chilians are homeless, and ruin is universal. It is impossible at to estimate the number of fatalities. An economic crisis is imminent. The latest news from Chili is that a large part of Vina del Mar, the fashionable suburb of Valparaiso, where European residents mostly live, has been burned. It is reported that Arica (the seaport of Tacna, Chili’s northernmost province, about twelve hundred and fifty miles north of Valparaiso) has been destroyed. Perfect order now prevails in Valparaiso owing to the presence of troops. Ambulances art collecting the injured. Traffic has been resumed on some sections of railway. Intense darkness was experienced after the first shock, and many people thought that the end of the world had come. Several who were suffering from weak hearts died of fright. The prisoners in the Santiago gaol were singing a hymn when the shock occurred. The walls of the prison fell, burying one hundred and forty. London, August 23 Advices from Valparaiso state that the first shock lasted 42 minutes and the second two minutes. Between 2000 and 3000 were killed and the fires are still raging. Several (islets have appeared in the bay. In all 60,000 .people are homeless. Valparaiso, August 23. The telegraphs and telephones between Valparaiso and Santiago have been restored.
