Young Lady’s Narrow Escape.
Auckland, August 24. A remarkable accident which, but for prompt action of an engine-driver, must have termimted fatally, occurred at Moruingside to-day to Miss Smith, a passenger by the 9 o’clock ’bus from Kingsland to Avondale. At one point on the route the road crosses the railway line, and when crossing the driver of the ’bus failed to notice an approaching train The passengers, however, saw the danger and called out. The ’bus got clear before the train reached the crossing, but in the excitement of the moment Miss Smith essayed a jump, and fell across the line. The engine-driver of the train fortunately saw the incident and immediately applied the brakes, with the result that when the engine reached the lady it was going at a very slow pace, and the cowcatcher pushed her out of danger. She received a number ot bruises, and is suffering from shock.
