MANAWATU (13) v. FOXTON (6). The above game was robbed of a certain amount of interest, owing to the boisterous weather of Saturday last. In fact, right throughout the game a stilt southerly wind Mew incessantly, and it was a case ofbest team with the wind to win. Nm some unaccountable reason, many of Foxton’s chosen team did not put in an appearance, and emergency men had to lie called to duty, and ail these distinguished themselves creditably and are to he commended for the brilliant game they put up against such an ■ >ver-po\vering side as Manawatu. The heavy breeze robbed the game of brilliancy and caused many infringements, both sides being at fault, though Manawatu fared worse in the referes’s opinion. If ■ here had been no breeze, it is inite likely the superiority of Vlanawatu’s rearguard would have registered a big score. As it was, they clearly instanced their mperiority in general knowledge. Compared with the visitors, Foxton backs were weak, though the l ocal forwards more than held their own. In the first spell, 3 road, by hard following up, was •ewarded with a try, and later on he same player was in the correct dace to score another try for Roxton. Neither of these were ion verted, and the spell closed with a six points lead for Foxton, who had been playing with the vind, and thus Manawatu were >:mned on their half almost throughout. When ends were reversed so was the state of the game, or though Foxton started off well, Manawatu made the most of the ireezy conditions and piled on three tries, two of which were converted. Stalker, Hammer, and Wingate were the scorers, while Ward converted two of these with splendid kicks. Besides this, that player made other splendid attempts at the posts. For the winners all the backs lid good service, including Stalker, Winiata, Hamer, Gordon, Hewitt, Hughes and Stevens, while Boon, Cel lit, Ward, Brough and Munir were noticeable forwards. For Foxton, Broad and McNae were most noticeable forwards, Oesraond, Larkin, Wright, Shaddolt and Newth being next. Jack Reid was fair. Of the backs, Tub Napier, Carroll and Coley were the best on the day. But then we have no backs to speak of. Mr Sutherland refereed, while Messrs Lyall and Frew held the lino Hays. After the game both teams, visiting members of the Manawatu Union and also Foxton Sub-Union members, sat down to dinner at Laing’s Hotel. Mr H. Austin (Chairman of the Sub-Union) presided, and all partook of a splendid bill-of-fare catered by Host and Hostess Laing, the following programme of toasts was honoured; —“The King,” “The Manawatu Rugby Union,’’ proposed by the chairman, response by Mr A. Gibbons (chairman of Manawatu R.U.); “The Manawatu Team,’’ proposed by Capt. McNae, response by Capt. Boon ; “ The Referee, ” proposed by Mr Payne, response by Mr Sutherland ; “ The Foxton Sub-Union.’’ proposed by Mr Gibbons, response by Messrs H. Austin and E. Sutherland ; “ Our Chairman,” proposed by Mr A. Gibbons, response by Mr H. Austin; “Host and Hostess and Ladies,” proposed by Mr Frew, response by Mr Heagerty (on behalf of those toasted). The singing of “Auld Laing Syne” concluded the affair, and the Manawatu visitors left immediately afterwards by special train for Palmerston North. NOTES. Sandon defeated Huia juniors on Saturday last by 5 points to nil. Mr F. Robinson refereed. McNae, Broad, and Winiata have all gained distinction by being included in the Manawatu rep. team which leaves for Taranaki and Wanganui to-morrow.
