Boats Ashore.

3.5. PUTIKI AND MOAHARD

AND FAST,

Whilst-making for Foxton 011 Saturday the s.s. Putiki- went ashore at the South Spit and is now hard and fast, whilst the S.S. Moa became entangled _ with the iver foundation just inside the bar, and is still fast. At low tide you can walk round some portions of the steamers. Unloading operations are being carried on to-day, and almost. all the coal has been put overboard in small boats and otherwise.

It is thought the Moa may get off at any tide, but the opinion _ is expressed as doubtful if the Putiki will get off at all, as she is in a bad place. The s.s. Huia has arrived, and is making efforts to release the boats.

There is no doubt that the high wind raging on Saturday had much to do with the mishaps. The beach at the Spit is strewn with coal, and enterprising townspeople have regained many loads of tlie household commodity. The s.s. Charles Edward got stuck in the river twice yesterday when making for the wharf, but got alongside last night safely and unloaded.
