TO Mr. L. WILSON. ~ A representative gathering of business people and citizens met at Mark Perreau’s rooms last evening for the purpose of wishing Mr L. Wilson a joyous trip to Australia and a safe return. And right royally was the guest entertained. There was song, speech and verse, and altogether a splendid evening was spent. The different speeches were enlighting to the mind, and exchanges of ideas as to the progress of Foxton should, bring about much good. Amongst those present were many of Foxton’s new citizens, who are lending a helping hand to the wheel of. progression. Needless to say there was much toasting, and the many good things said of Mr L. Wilson bore strong evidence to the esteem in which he is held by Foxton residents generally. The Mayor of Foxton (B. G. Gower, Esq.) was in the chair, and it fell to that gentleman’s lot to ably propose the toast of * ‘ Our Guest.” which was done in a fitting and appropriate manner. Other speakers to the toast were Messrs A. Shadbolt, A. Johnston, F. Breckles, A. Fraser, A. 3), Clemett, G. W. Morgan, J. A. Nash and W. S. Stewart, and all these gentlemen referred eulogistically to the many good qualities of Mr Wilson. In presenting both Mr and Mrs L. Wilson with slight tokens of esteem, the Mayor wished them on behalf of Foxton, a very happy holiday and safe return.

Mr 1,. Wilson suitably returned tbanks for the gifts, also for the many kind expressions which fell from the lips of fellow-townsmen. When he returned he would still go on assisting in the good work of citizenship, in an even more • marked degree. (Applause.) Other toasts were:— “The King’’; “Borough Council,’* proposed by Mf J. A. Nash, response by Cr Shadbolt and Mr Fraser (Town Clerk); “ Local Industries,’’ proposed by G. W, Morgan, response by Messrs A• Johnston and C. L. Barnard; “ The Mayor,” proposed by Mr A. Fraser, response by Mr B. G* Gower, (Mayor) ; “ The Ladies, ’* proposed by Mr W., S. Stewart, response by Mr E. Hill; “The Visitors,” proposed by Mr Wilson, response by Messrs Watchorn, Sutton, E. Nash, and Dr Tatton ; “The Press,” proposed by Mr A. D. Clemett, response by Herald representative ; “ Our Host,” proposed by Mr J. A. Nash, response by Mr M. Perreau. During the evening proceedings were considerably enlivened with vocal items by some of the gentlemen present. Proceedings finally closed with the singing of ‘‘ Auld Lang Syne.”

Mr and Mrs L. Wilson and child left by this morning’s coach for Levin en route to Australia, where we trust they will thoroughly enjoy themselves, eventually returning to our township fully restored to good health. They carry with them the best wishes of our townsfolk.
