An important meeting of the committee of the Foxton Racing Club is called for Monday night next at 7.30 p.m., at the rooms. The Foxton Borough Council hold a special meeting to-morrow night to consider the question of suitably lighting the new Borough offices.

We have to acknowledge receipt of a complimentary ticket to attend a banquet to be given at the Masonic Hall by the M.U.1.0. O.F. Bodge, after the installation and opening ceremony on Tuesday night next, July 31st. Mr W. Cook has had several desirable building sections (situated in the heart of the town) placed in his hands for disposal. Through the property in question, the Borough plans show that a street is to be formed, and as the sections are. for sale at a cheap figure and terms are reasonable, the agent should have no difficulty in finding buyers. Further particulars can be had on application to Mr W. T. R. Cook,

A fair number of dancers availed themselves of the opportunity to attend the fortnightly Band Assembly at the Public Hall last night.' A.t the conclusion, it was announced that owing to the hall being engaged for the next three Wednesdays theae would be no continuance on those dates, while if the Assembly was to be continued after that date all would be notified per medium of the paper. Quite a number of local horses are in training ior future events, and we will be very unfortunate il they do not share somewhat in the stakes promised by the different racing clubs this season. As one gent puts it “ Our local racecourse reminds one of Flemington in the early morns of late.” Whether these prads are worth the oats that are being put inside them remains to be seen ?

At the end of May (the last returns to hand in the Journal of the Labour Department) the Department of Roads was employing 2749 throughout the colony. They were distributed as follows: —Auckland, 407 ; Te Kuiti, 384 ; Rotorua, 224 ; Hawke’s Bay, 209 ; Taranaki, 334; Wanganui, 302 ; Wellington, 246; Marlborough, 83; Nelson, 117; Westland, 102; Canterbury, 72; Otago, 64; Southland, 115. Mr Ulic Shannon, handicapped, was in attendance at the Athletic Club meeting on Tuesday evening, and spoke of the possibility ot the formation of a New Zealand Athletic Union, a body which was intended to govern cash athletics. Mr Shannon thought much good would come of such a Union, and he strongly urged the Foxton Athletic Club to represent itself at any meeting called in connection therewith. In all probability a meeting would be called at Feildiug shortly.

Miss Duff, typiste and shorthand writer of Palmerston North, has decided to commence her classes in both these subjects at Foxton. The new schoolroom has been obtained, and the opening lessons, as announced in another part of isrue, will commence on Monday evening next at 7.30. Miss Duff has a most satisfactory record as a teacher in Palmerstdn North and elsewhere, so that those who desire to become her pupils should notify her without any delay.

At the meeting of the Athletic Club on Tuesday evening last, the secretary (Mr F. Whibley) was made the recipient of a pair of field glasses by the Club, in slight recompense for his able service as secretary. Mr Sutherland (chairman) made the presentation with appropriate accompanying remarks, and Mr Whibley suitably returned thanks for the honour done him. As in the past, he would be found willing! to lend what support was in his ! power to the Athletic Club. j*. (Applause).

All members of the Albion Football club are requested to attend practice at the Public Hall ftar morrow night. Prior to the close of the Athletic . Club meeting on Tuesday evening last, those present accepted the hospitality of Mr Ulic Shannon by joining him in a light supperhospitality which was greatly enjoyed and likewise commented upon in an appreciative manner. On the occasion of his visit to Foxton on Tuesday last, the New Zealand Times sporting scribe was shown over the Foxton racecourse and Athletic Park by a steward cf the Foxton Racing Club, Mr A. Raing. Mr Shannon also viewed most of our racing stock. Mr T. Y. Seddon, M.H.R., was entertained by his Hokitika ladies 1 committee at afternoon tea. There was. a very large attendance of the public, including country representatives. Mr Joseph Mandl, an ex-Mayor, presided and during the afternoon the ladies presented the new member with a gold sovereign case as a souvenir of the occasion. Competition was very keen for office at the Athletic Club meeting on Tuesday evening, especially for vice-presidents. There were 18 candidates, and only 12 to be returned. Mr A. Raing topped the poll with 16 -votes, while Messrs A. Shadbolt and Watchorn were second on the list only one point behind. Five others tied, with eight votes each, for the twelfth position, and the chairman 1 was called upon to give his casting vote, which was in favour of Mr C. T. Fasten. It appears that the damage docu at the Bunnythorpe dried milk factory was not so serious as at first anticipated. The police have ascertained that the trap referred to as being seen on the road at the time of the occurrence was driven by a young man named Norman Crocker, who had been to the Palmerston Hospital for some ice for Dr McCallum, of Feilding. Crocker states the first explosion occurred at 2.15 a.m. when he was almost opposite the factory, and the second at 2.25 a.m. He saw no glare of fire and met no one on the road. There are, at presenter no further developments in connection with the matter. A destructive fire occurred at Rongotea on Monday night last, when the following places were destroyed : implement warehouse, plumbers shop and furniture store ot Messrs Suttons; the shop and dwelling formerly owned by Mr F. Jones ; and the dwelling house of Mr F, Wright, owned by Mr J, Glover. This meant a whole block, and in 'ess than two hours the whole lot was in ashes. It was with difficulty the premises of Mr T. Geerstou and the Coronation Hall were saved. Insurances are not expected to cover half the losses.

Interviewed by the Sydney Telegraph, last week, “Dick” Arnst, the New Zealander who won the Sydney Thousand cycle race in March last, said he had. had enough of cycling both on the track and road. He is satisfied to end his career with the Sydney Thousand. Questioned as to the object of his visit to Sydney again, \nist replied, “ Well, I’m going to try and win the sculling championship of the world, and I cannot train for cycling and sculling too. I’ve made up my mind to win the world’s sculling championship, and with that end in view have come across to put in twelve months’ training on the Parramatta River, with George Towns to coach me. Twelve months hence I’ll challenge the holder of the world’s championship, who aver he may be.” If pluck, stamina and strength go for anything, and he shapes as wellFasrhir admirers think he will, Arnst should have a successful career as a sculler.
