Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 24, 1906. LIGHT!
The Borough Council found itself face to face last night with the lighting question. It was not a matter of thousands or even hundreds, but at all events it was a matter of lights, and an important one too—that of providing our new Borough Chambers with a suitable glimmer to prevent all concerned from groping in the darkness. As is well known to ratepayers, the Borough is in a weak state financially, and much complaint is heard re overburdening rates ; and councillors generally realised that they would have to provide for the cheapest possible scheme. There was no doubting that our flash civic offices had to be well-lighted, cost what it may. There was talk of electricity being supplied by millowners who are installing this form of light, but while in favour of this light if it is a good one, we would not urge Council to accept same until they have witnessed its power and strength. As the Town Clerk said, there is electric light—and electric light ! Under the circumstances, we think it advisable for Council to go in for an acetylene plant at present, which no doubt Council will decide to do. As explained, these pipes would then come in again for use in the event of a gas-service being established in the Borough at some distant date. The - whole question will be dealt with at a special meeting called for Friday night, when we trust our civic authorities will act wisely.
