Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1906. OUR RIVER.
It is heartily sickening to note boat after boat stuck, in our river, and the outcry to have the channel deepened and improved generally is certainly needed. Our Chamber of Commerce, also the Palmerston body of that ilk, have^endeavoured in the past to bring this matter forcibly before the Government, and we appdal to those in authority to grant money for the carrying out of this important work. It is rumoured that the s.s. Waverley, which we believe was to have brought a cargo of coal to this port, has been ordered not to make the trip,—we presume on account of the possibility of the steamship. being stuck in the river. If this sort of thing is allowed to continue, we shall be in a nice pickle directly. There will be a coal famine round these parts., We understand only a small order came to hand by the Himitangi, while it is said one of the local coal-dealers is left without any of the useful commodity on his hands, whereas the other has but a small quantity. Governmental and other orders north of Foxton must necessarily suffer, and it seems, to us a concerted and united effort should be made to have sufficient money placed on the Estimates to carry out the deepening of our river channel. We must work for ■ ourselves, as it is becoming monotonous to observe boats continually stuck in the river. This must hamper merchandise trade to an extent, and something will surely have to be done shortly, if the future is to be provided for.
