The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 17, 1906. THE DREYFUS CASE.

How a decade brings forth marked changes is evidenced by the latest turn the Dreyfus case has taken. Although Dreyfus himself was years ago allowed to forego the solitude of Devil’s Island and permitted to breathe the atmosphere of Parisian soil, it was not until a week ago that he fully convinced the French Chamber of Deputies that he was entirely innocent of the crime of divulging State military secrets that had been evidently concocted against him way back in the early nineties. That he has at last succeeded in substantiating his innocence to the French Powers is conclusively proved by the fact that he was so heartily cheered by the members of that Chamber in the precincts of their own haunts, British and Foreign journalists generally since the first trial have always maintained the fallacy of the charge laid against Captain Dreyfus, the weakness of the evidence which convicted him, and the unfairness of the Court of Justice which returned the verdict of guilty against the much-wronged Dreyfus ; and it must be gratifying to the Press of outside nations to realise that at last their continuous endeavours to show the French authorities their injustice has borne forth fruit, and that the-authorities in question are now so convinced that one of the most renowned wrongs has been righted. All lovefs of fair play will be pleased to note the latest development of the case, and the outside world hopes to record that the wronged French military officer will now be fully compensated, financially and otherwise, for the wrong he has been subjected to. May the case in question prove a lesson to bogus and faked trials ending-in wrong convictions.
