Hastings, July 13An elderly man had a trying and exciting experience in a local restaurant. Whilfe having lunch a large lump of steak caught in his throat and chocked him. The man was unable to breathe and a doctor was called in. The doctor seeing that the man was fainting away, made an inpision in the windpipe with a penknife and allowed the man to breath, afterwards extracting the obstruction which was an inch and a half long. MAILMAN MISSING. Stratford July 13. Thomas Jolley, 35 years of age, mailman, left Tatu on Sunday for Whangamomona with the mails. The distance is twenty-five miles, but he has not since been heard of. It is surmised Jolley lost his life in crossing the flooded Tangarakau river, which intersects the road at three places on his route. At the last crossing the cage is defective, and Jolley may have tried to cross the waterswept bridge. Jolley was a native of Gippsland. A search party from Whangamomona has gone out.
A NARROW ESCAPE.
At Mr F, G. Harvey's dairy farm at the Styx (Canterbury) on Tuesday morning, a big pine tree was snapped off near the ground by the violent gale and blown on to the house. It crashed through the roof splintering the rafter and ceiling, and generally wrecked the furniture of a bedroom, besides doing other damage. A four months infant sleeping on the bed at the time had a miraculuous escape. The child was surrounded by debris, but quite unhurt. A portion of the tree was lying across the bed, and splintered wood lay all over the place. The gale also played havoc with the stacks in the neighbourhood and scattered them all round the paddocks.
