Foxton Borough Council.
ORDINARY MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held at the Library Buildings last evening, there being present —His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower Esq.), Crs Coley, Austin, Cray, Frank' land, Baker, and Moore. Apologies were received from other Councillors. The minutes of the previous ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. REPORTS. The Poundkeeper reported that 22 horses and 22 cows had been impounded during the month* One bay mare had been sold during the month for ss, while expenses totalled £2 14s 6d. The Inspector of Nuisances reported the Borough to be in a clean and sanitary state up to the time he was compelled to take to his bed through illness. The Borough Overseer reported at length on works carried out, and suggested the following That a drain be opened in Coley street, opposite Mr Hickson’s house; that pipe culvert in Coley street, at junction of Futter street be enlarged, and a bridge be put from Coley street to Gladstone street; also that new kerbing be put down in Main street at Post Office. Most of this work has been held over from previous reports, owing to material not being available.
The Borough Treasurer reported that since last monthly meeting the sum of ,£143 i6s 6d had been paid into the District Fund Account, and that the Sank balances stood that day as follows: —District Fund Account Building Doan Account j£iooo at credit. With the accounts to be passed that night, the General Account would be overdrawn to the amount of irs 9d, the separate accounts showing balances as follows :—library 5s rod; Cemetery £7 3 s 108 J Reserves 8s 3d; Interest £67 10s sd. In his accompanying remarks the Borough Treasurer explained much in detail wijflt reterence to the £IOOO loan W new Borough buildings. The reports as read were adopted, and accounts passed for payment. GBNERAI,. A letter was received from ratepayers in Hall and Whyte streets asking Council to reconsider their decision to remove lamp from op* posite Public Hall. A letter bearing on the same subject was also read from Mr J. Symons.— Cr Baker proposed, and Cr Austin seconded, giving notice of notion that the resolution relating thereto be rescinded. On the motion of Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Coley, Mr B. G. Gower was given power to sign cheques in place of G. A. Simpson resigned. Mr J. Haack wrote resigning as ranger. Councillors generally thought the ranger should be done away with, and the blue paper tried to meet the increasing nuisance.- Eventually proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Austin, :i That no ranger be appointed and the police bereqmsted to take action against all owners of straying horses and cattle and an advertisement be placed in local paper bearing upon this matter.” Carried. Mr Saunders, contracter for the Main street concrete culvert, wrote asking for immediate payment of £6 3s rod in dispute over the work.—Messrs Gifford Moore and Beale, solicitors, also wrote re the matter. —After a little discussion; in which the Borough Clerk explained that he held Saunders’ clear receipt, it was proposed by Cr Baker seconded by Cr Frankland, “That Messrs Gifford Moore and Beale be informed that the Council has settled Mr Saunders’ account in full and hold that gentleman’s receipt for contract done by him.” Carried. Proposed by Cr Gray, seconded, by Cr Austin, “ That the Coundl obtain a tender from Mr Riramer for a concrete kerbing and water table opposite new Council Chambers, say from crossing at Post Office to crossing at Mr Johnston’s boarding house.” Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Gray, “That the owners of sections within the Borough who have trees or shrubs overhanging the footpaths be notified to trim same back to boundary or otherwise the Council will have same done and cost to the owners. ” Carried. The Rangitikei County Council wrote asking co-operation of Foxton Borough Council in urging improved telephone service. tetters of thanks were received from Mrs Seddon and the Premier in reply to messages of condolence passed by the Council relating to the death of Mr Seddon 1
A letter was received from Mr Moore, solicitor, complaining that the drain at Lye Hop’s property Efei not been attended to.—The outcome was that the Public Works Committee were to visit the spot to-day. The Council then adjourned a little after 9 p.m.
