'E. A. COLEY COMPETITION. (6) v. HUIA (3). 'f Rather cm unexpected $ victory was recorded Awahou juniors yesterday at the racecourse. The weather was boisterous, and Awahou won the toss and decided to play with a strong wind in their favour. They made the best 0: this advantage, and as a result Barney Spelman kicked a goal and Bogue scored an unconverted try in the first half. Prestling may have scored another, if he had gone on with the ball on. one occasion. When ends were changed, Huia attacked, strongly and soon had Awahou in trouble defending their line. Huia worked hard, and eventually Ashton Napier kicked a goal from a penalty. Still Huia worked hard to get level, but they always got offside in a passing rush or kicked the leather too hard to be effective, and the Awahou defence lasted long enough to win by 6 to 3. For Awahou, Spelman, Wilson, G. Coley, McKay, Cunningham, Bogue, Bales, Brown and Jillett worked hard, though the two latter should pay more respect to the offside rule. For Huia, Perewhit, Ashton Napier, Saville, Bowe, and the two wing forwards were the best of a hard-working set. Some of this team would do well to discontinue an inclination to play rough. Many of them thus infringing cost their side free-kicks. Huia sorely missed Davis yesterday behind the pack. ■Mr Sutherland refereed, while Messrs Imrie and Hickson acted as touch judges. NOTES. The Manawatu Union rule that Wanderer players cannot play for Foxton next Saturday, pending decision of N.Z. Union re the boundary questiou. The action of the Foxton SubUnion in awarding the junior match to Albion last week was upheld. The names of Rev. Harper, Messrs Foote and Nash have been submitted to Foxton authorities to choose a referee for Saturday next, Manawatu Referees Association rightly debarred the recommendation of the Foxton Union that their secretary be appointed as referee next Saturday, seeing that the secretary is also selector and manager of the team. The reps are reminded to have white knickers, while those who have blue and black guernseys will please bring them. The Sandon Club cannot play their junior match with Huia on Saturday, and the only game on the racecourse will be a scratch match.
