The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 3, 1906.
Sickness is prevalent at present, the changeable weather of late no doubt being responsible. Constable Dixon, Foxton’a new officer of the law, arrived on Friday last and took charge of his duties immediately. "Euchre Parties" are the popular mode of enjoyment in Foxton recently, and many of these are on the tapis at present. A lull list of characters in the drama of " Current Cash ” to be staged in Foxton to-morrow night will be found in another column, - If sufficient inducement offers, Miss Duff notifies the public of Foxton that she intends to start classes for shorthand and typewriting. The Manawatu Flaxmills Union are called together for special business at the Temperance Hall on Friday evening at 7.30 o’clock. The High Commissioner cables:— Hemp market firm; demand expected to increase; g.f.a.q. Wellington on spot quoted at £33 per ton and same price applies to October-Decembor shipments. Mr Henry Coley gives notice elsewhere that he has started carting with an up-to date lorrie, and will be -pleased to execute orders for delivery to all parts of the town and district. Tenders are invited by Watchorn, Stiles and Co., for alterations and additions to their drapery premises Plans and specifications can be seen at the stores, tenders to close on Monday next at noon. There is a "sale craze” raging in Foxton just now, and drapers especially are displaying their goods and sale prices to effect. Business in this particular line is being pushed, and bargains are the order of the day. Smale and Hay are to the fore with a great bargain sale commencing almost immediately. Being heavily overstocked they intend to clear lines at sacrifice prices, and will doubtless do good business. Look at their advertisement.
The Manawatu Standard says decrees absolute have been issued by the local registrar of the Supreme Court in the divorce oases of William Cameron v. Rachel Cameron and W. Rout, and C. W. Bowling v. Adeline Bowling. “ Why is it that the Jews as a body are so free from diseases such as cancer or consumption ?” asked F. T. Moore it the meeting of the Wellington Hospital Trustees, and adds: “ Why should not we Gentiles follow their example ?” Some idea of tho extent of the Canterbury Exhibition Buildings can be obtained from the fact that the Decorative Committee are considering the question of procuring eighteen miles of decorative material. The report of a discharged gun In the vicinity of Main street on Sunday afternoon last caused much wonder and thought by those who heard it. To ease minds, it should be mentioned the course of firing had to be adopted to clear the barrel of the toul-piece, and no lives were lost. It is just as well the Foxton Borough expended money on concrete culverts recently, for the heavy rain downpour last night ssriously tested their effectiveness. As it was their holding capacity has been fully taxed, and if the work had not been of tho best material, thsro is no telling the result. We have to go from home to hear news. Thus the Manawatu Standard : —“ The large and extensive stables of Mr T. Messena, caretaker of the Foxton racecourse, were totally destroyed by fire last Friday evening between six and ■-even o’clock. All the horses, were, however, removed without injury. A' vge quantity of feed, etc., was lost.” c "'rp wag has evidently been “ pulling 1 ” of the Standard correspondent, cables are still standing above ground-. •

A Primitive Methodist social is to be held in the schoolroom on Thursday next. The admisson fee has been fixed ot Is. In our advertising columns will be found notices from Mrs T. Haywood advertising that a supply of fresh fish is wanted daily; also that a good quiet cow will be bought. We are pleased to note as a result of interview with Councillors, Mr B. G. Gower has consented to act as Mayor of Foxton for the current year. He wan duly installed at a special meeting of Council on Saturday last. A gang of fourteen men struck on Wednesday, writes a Taihape correspondent. It appears that these men have been working on the ballast trai" and have no grievance as to wages, but only as to the manner in which the metal is brought to them to unload. The men maintain that they are prevented from making a living wage. However, the chief engineer has promised to look into the trouble. C, M. Ross and Co. insert a replace advertisement calling the attention of thrifty housewives, hotel proprietors, and boarding-house keepers to their annual winter sale, which, commences on Thursday next at 10 a.m. Having the largest stock in the Manawatu dis trict, and the reputation of selling goods of reliable quality . only, this will be a splendid opportunity of saving 8$ to 10s in every pound expended. Surgeons in the Trull Hospital, Biddeford. Maine, performed an operation recently while a fire was ra<rng in the building. The fire broke out soon after the operation was begun. To have moved the patient would have meant death, and the surgeons, therefore, continued their work. When water began to drip through the roof, nurses were summoned to hold umbrellas over their heads. When the operation was completed, the patient Was removed in B&ffitv AN HONOURABLE DISTINCTION i The Western Medical Review, a medical publication of the highest standing, says in a recent issue-“ Thousands of physicians in this and other countries have attested that SANDER AND SONS EUCALYPTI EXTRACT is not only absolutely reliable but it has a pronounced and indisputable luperlority over all other preparations of eucalyptus.” Your heaUh is too precious to be tampered with, therefore reject all products foisted upon you by unscrupulous mercenaries and insist upon getting SANDER AND SONS’ PURE VOLATILE EUCALYPTI EXTRACT, the only preparation recommended by your physician and the medical press.
