A Mayor For Foxton.

. SPECIAL meeting OF COUNCIL. THE LATE MAYOR TO BE APPROACHED. A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present: Crs Gray, Coley. Shadbolt, Frankland, Baker, Moore, and Stiles. An apology was received from Cr Austin.

Cr Gray had been already voted to the chair, when the Town Clerk, Mr Alf. Fraser, explained that it was customary in such cases that the Clerk should take the chair, and accordingly Cr Gray vacated the position in favour of Mr Fraser, who explained that the business of the meeting was to appoint a Mayor for the Borough of Foxton to fill the vacancy caused by Mr G. A. Simpson, who had wrote resigning the position. Any ratepayer cn the roll or Councillor was eligible to fill the position, and it would be his (the chairman’s) duty to receive nominations.

Several requests were put to Cr Gray to allow himself to occupy the position, and his nomination by Cr Frankland was actually wrote out, but Cr Gray declined the honour witn thanks.

Then requests to Cr Stiles and Cr Baker met a similar fate, the latter mentioning that he would only accept office if it were the unanimous wish of the Council? Cr Baker thought Cr Gray the right man of the Council for the position. Thing were beginning to look queer for the probability of Fox* ton ever possessing a civic head, when the late Mayor’s name was mentioned i and Council were unanimous that Mr B. G. Gower should be approached on the matter. It was thereupon proposed by Cr Baker, "seconded by Cr Stiles, and carried unanimously That the Council wait upon B. G. Gower, Esq,, and request him to become Mayor of Foxton for the current year.

Cr Coley proposed, and Cr Shadbolt seconded, “That the Council accept the resignation of Mr G. A. Simpson as regret.” Carried. ‘ ?
