Football.

THE AUSTIN BANNER COMPETITION.

AWAHOU (6) v. HUIMAI (o)

The above game cannot be said to have been a good display of football. As a matter of fact, Awahou had but a comparatively weak team, while Huimai had one of their best. The Awahou score consisted of a penalty goal converted and a try, both being registered by Bert Shadbolt, who played a solid game throughout for the winners, Syd Wright played one of his best games, though he must drop that hot-headed habit of his. Jeffries, W. Coley, Reid, Lambert, and Broad were other noticeable players in the black ranks. Jillett, as a substitute, made himself prominent through a desire to take free-kicks. Better to have given them. to others as his booting abilities were very weak. Some of the substitutes played had a great desire to dodge scrum work, and at one time there were no less than three half-backs, which militated against the success of Bell behind the scrum.

Oroua Bridge seemed to display a good idea of playing movements, but their execution of splendidly thought out methods was lamentably weak. Mat and George Royal, Simmonds, Birchley, and Sutherland were the best of the backs, while Pate Larkin urged the forwards on to do much hard work in his usual fashion. Mr O’Dea gave great satisfaction AS referee, whilst J. Desmond and J. Cameron held the touch flags. NOTES. It is to be hoped the Oroua Bridge team keep together, as they have some good material in their midst, and generally speaking, the - makings of a splendid combination. - The secretary mentioned, at Saturday night’s meeting of the Sub-Union, that complaints had reached him of the conduct of a recent travelling team, and the (Union strongly disapproved of *.ime, at the same time administering good advice to those in charge of future teams that have to travel. Please take the hint. There seems to be the same old trouble with the Union gatekeeper. The latter laid a complaint on

Saturday evening against offenders) and a motion of censure was placed on the minute book. It would be wise for this class of individual to respect the Sub-Union officials rather than insult him, The officials of the Sub-Union are to wear ribbon-badges in future, and all such shall have authority to clear the lines. Note this!

Awahou junior team for Sandon to-morrowßrougliton, Potaka, Jillett, Andreson, Young, Bogue, G. Coley, McKay, Riggs, Bell, Bevan, Punch, Bayley, Pako, Bales, Khiefgs.—Bees, Moses, Osboldstone, Ball. The tram leaves at 1.15 p.m. If reports are true one hears about the absence of several prominent Awahou players from their ranks on Saturday last, we deplore the childish action which prevented such personages from donning the black guernsey. Surely all these reports we hear cannot be true; for, it so, such individuals should be relegated to the touch-line for life, tor they can be no benefit to any Club, even if they were players of the Roberts or Wallace type. We regret to state that unmanliness is so credited to members of the Awahou club. Right through the season there seems to have been a wave of discontent amongst Awahou club members, and the sooner the storm is over, so much the better for yourselves and your popularity. The public may get sickened of their idols if you continue wrangling. There is some doubt as to how the result of the games played by Sandon juniors will go. It is alleged they played a senior, and the next meeting of the Sub-Union will decide the question. Position in Championsips. Senior.

SUB-UNION MEETING. A meeting of the Foxton Football sub-union delegates was held at Haywood’s Hotel on Saturday, June gth, there being present— Messrs P. O’Dea (in the chair), and J. Cameron (Sandon), F. Robinson and J. Jillett (Awahou), J. Desmond and R. Newth (Hula), A. Shadbolt (Oroua Bridge), J. Williams and A. Imrie (Albion), and the secretary. The minutes of last meetings of sub-union and management committee were read and confirmed. A letter was read from the , Horowhenua Rugby Union relative to a team in the Horowhenua Rugby District playing for the Foxton competition. The Horowhenua wished to know what action was to be taken before they laid the facts before the N.Z. Union. After short discussion on the matter of boundaries, the secretary moved, and F. Robinson seconded, and it was carried, “ That we write to the Manawatu Union asking advice on the question of boundaries, as between Foxton sub-union and Horowhenua Union, and that the secretary be instructed to write Horowhenua Union informing 1 them as to s.teps taken.” In reply to Mr E. Dunn, who offered to act as referee at junior matches, the secretary was instructed to write explaining the initial steps to be taken. It was left to the secretary to grant authority for scratch matches within the district. The secretary was instructed to purchase seven more rep guernseys. He was also instructed to try and arrange a senior rep match with Manawatu at Foxton if possible on July 7th; also junior rep matches with Rangitikei and Manawatu junior reps at dates to be arranged; also to have badges printed, so that the authority of delegates and officers may be made known. The secretary mentioned to the meeting that the Foxton gatekeeperTiad complained about being openly insulted whilst carrying out his duties, and a motion was passed strongly disapproving of any such conduct. j Much discussion took place}

: over the matter of Thompson, a Sandon player, whom it was alleged was a senior player when he played against Albiors in the jnmor match .“-‘The facts Were that Thompson had played two senior games this seasom prior to the junior contest he played in, and the question arose whether he took part in the senior matches as a picked player or emergency.— Mr Shadbolt contended he was a senior player, whilst others in meeting'wished the matter fully cleared Up. Mr Cameron (Sandon) felt sure Thompson played only as an emergency. The discussion brought forth the - following motions, both being carried

Proposed by Mr Jillett, seconded by Mr Robinson, “ That iti future secretaries of Clubs be instructed to furnish secretary of sub-union with picked men and emergencies of all teams.”

Proposed by Mr Robinson, seconded by Mr Shadbolt, “ That secretary be Instructed to ascertain if possible, whether H. Thompson’s name was among the fifteen picked to play against a senior team this year or any occasion.” The drawings for the second round of the junior contest took place as follows ; June 20,—Huia v. Sandon, at Sandon; Rev. Father Molloy referee. Albion v. Awahou, at Foxton, Mr Sutherland referee. June 27.—Sandon v. Albion, at Foxton; Mr Keriona referee. July 4. —Awahou v. Huia, at Foxton; Mr Sutherland referee. July 11. —Sandon v. Awahou, at Foxton ; Mr Keriona referee. • July 18.—Albion v. Huia, at Foxton ; Mr Sutherland referee. The Management Committee then met, there being present — Messrs J. Cameron (chair), F. Robinson, J. Williams, R. Newth, and the secretary. Several transfers from one club to another were asked for, but the chairman explained that he thought a rule of N.Z. Rugby Union prevented any transfers being granted after June xst. Pending inquiries on the point, no transfers were granted. The following players were reinstated from senior to junior:— Awahou Club, J. Prestling and Bert Brown; Albion Club, F. Charles was re-instated; Huia Club, Harrison and Marsh.

Votes of thanks to the chair and to Mr Haywood for use of room concluded the meeting.
