Foxton Borough Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council, held last evening, was attended by His Worship the Mayor (G. A. Simpson, Esq.), Crs Moore, Baker, Austin, Shadbolt, Gray, Coley and Hickson. The minutes of the last ordinary and special meetings we*e read and confirmed. REPORTS. The Inspector of Nuisances reported the Borough to be in a clean and sanitary state. The Borough Overseer reported at length on works carried out during the month and suggested the following That Awahou culvert be metalled and some

timber-work put in from wings to protect banks of drain; also that footpaths be graded and kerbjd; that a water-channel be from Post Office to the and concrete mouths be put on pipes, which will require new metal or coarse sand ; that some bad holes at junction of Avenue Road and Baker Street be filled In, which will require from 6 to 8 loads of metal; that the bridge leading from Coley Street to Gladstone Street, passed to be done some time ago, be put in with old timber from Awahou bridge; the outlet at Avenue culvert is scouring very bad ; that the Main Street water tables be cleaned, and rubbish taken from them be put on Harbour Street, where sand was taken from. The Borough Treasurer reported that since last monthly meeting the sum of £24 10s 3d had been paid into District Fund Account, ind that the bank balance stood that day at debit ,£229 7s 4d, the balances of separate accounts being as follows :—General, ,£539 2s 2d overdrawn; Cemetery £7 4s 4d, Library £43 17s id, Reserves The reports were adopted, and accounts as read passed for payment, TECHNICAL EDUCATION. Messrs A. D. Clemett and D. Wilson (on behalf of School Committee) waited on Council with reference to receiving the co-opera-tion of Mayor and Councillors in the technical school movement f#r Foxton. They would have no expense in erecting a suitable building, and Mr Clemett (as spokesman) thought that about £l2O only would have to be raised (including subsidy from the Board) when the proposed technical classes would be a reality. They wished the Council to assist them in calling a public meeting to consider the whole matter. The Mayor explained that Council would only be too pleased to assist, and later on, by resolution of the Council, it was decided that a public meeting be called on Monday, June 25th, to consider the whole project. ' A GENERAL RAKING UP. Considerable discussion place regarding a complaint rffQf ceived from the Borough Overseer as to one of his workmen not attending to his duties in a thorough manner.—The question most at issue was whether the Borough Overseer should be given authority - to dispense with the services of a workman without necessarily waiting for the Council to do so.— Eventually it was resolved, on motion of Cr Moore, seconded by Cr Austin, That the foreman be given authority to discharge the workmen employed under him when he considers it necessary. Cr Shadbolt alone dissented.

A complaint re ranging was met with the following resolution being carried, proposed by Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Baker, That the ranger be informed that if he does not attend to his duties his appointment will be cancelled.

The lamplighter is also to be requested that, owing to numerous complaints, he pay more attention to the lights. ■ The Borough Clerk complained to the Council that the Poundkeeper was not acting up to the terms of his agreement. —Event* ually carried, proposed by Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Gray, That the Pomldkeeper be informed that if any more complaints are received from the Town Clerk his lease will be cancelled and Jre»h tenders called for same. TENDERS. The tender of Mr Rimmer for constructing the new Borough Chambers and Library in wood was accepted. By resolution of the Council it decided that the roof frame be of wood instead of steel. RESOLUTIONS. Proposed by Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Austin, That in pursuance and exerise of the powers in it in that behalf by the Municipal Corporation Act 1900 and amendments and the Public Libraries Act 1869, the Foxton Borough Council do now strike a general rate of is gd in the £ and Library rate of id in the £ on the' annual rental value of the whole of the rateable properties within the Borough, of Foxton for the period commencing on the Ist April, 1906 and terminating on 31st March, 1907, to be due and payable in one sum at the Council Office on Ist day of July, 1906. Carried. • iProposed by Cr Moore, seconded by Cr Shadbolt, That the Lady’s Mile be left to by Cr Gray, seconded liPPhstin, That the Post and Telegraph Department be notified to put a new crossing in, at least eight feet in length at the entrance to the Pest Office; also that the owners of all other crossings in bad repair be notified to repair same at once, otherwise the Council will have same done and charge them with the cost. Carried. GENERAL. Cr Hickson brought Under the ( notice of Councillors last evening the bad state of Coley street.—The matter was left in the hands of the Works Committee, the said committee and the Borough Overseer to meet on the spot lo consider what shall be done. . A letter was read from Levin and Co. asking Council to put a price on girders from Awahou Bridge.—Resolved to call for tenders for the 19 stringers.

Cr Hickson brought under the notice of Council that a lamp was badly needed at corner of Cook and Johnston street. Resolved that lamp post in Hall street be shifted to corner of Cook and Johnston street.

A letter was read in answer to the application of Council urging % larger mail delivery.—Mr A. D. Clemett (postmaster) attended and explained that such could not be done without an extra carrier, or unless some of those residents at present receiving two deliveries a day would be content with one. He did not think the Postal Department would send another latter carrier along this way. Cr Baker proposed, and Cr Shadbolt seconded, That in reply to postmaster’s letter re complete delivery of letters to all parts of the Borough not at present served, that there are no less than ten houses left out in the cold, and the Council urges therefore a reconsideration of previous request and further in view of numerous residences now being erected within the Borough that an extra carrier be sent to enable this most necessary convenience. Carried. The Council rose about 10.10.
