Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 1906. ON THE ROAD OF PROGRESS.
1 This year is witnessing Foxton’s advance in a marked degree. For instance, we have the introduction of rope-works in our midst, which alone must swell our population to an extent, and help to keep families surviving. Buildings, residences, &c., are going up in all directions, and contractors have in hand at present many evidences of progressive times. We deplore the fact that the Bank authorities did not see fit to erect their Foxton structure in brick in preference to wood, but we trust ratepayers will be more in keeping with the times and elect ’to have the proposed Council Chambers in brick. Needless to sa\ r , there is bound to be- a marked difference in the cost c brick compared with wood, lot we feel certain any extra cost would be money well spent. The argument may be advanced that a wooden building may answer our wants, also that considerable extra cost will be attached to the laying of a sound foundation for a brick building. Be that as it may, we would urge ratepayers generally to secure a good article whilst they are at it—an article that will last for all time, and to a certain extent, be free from fire. We cannot reasonably expect to guard ourselves thoroughly against disasters of the Sau Francisco order, but we can certainly decide on a bueldhjg that will not only do credit to present-day requirements but in a measure guard against the dangers of fire. We trust that Councillors generally will support our contention, and so place facts clearly before ratepayers at the public meeting to be called shortly.
