E. A. COLEY COMPETITION,
SiVNDON v. HUIA
The above junior contest took place at the racecourse yesterday afternoon, when a close struggle eventuated, the game, ending in a draw. The game could not be termed an excellent exposition of football, infringements being too frequent to allow of a neat display. During the first spell, matters were pretty well even. Sandon scored a try immediately after the start of the game, Eglington distinguishing' himself. No goal resulted. Just prior to half time, a barefooted Huia native scored a try bv fast following up- This try was obtained well back from the goal-line, and some trouble was experienced before referee cou give his decision. There was no lead ball line pegged off, and a footrule and touch flag had to be brought into commission by the arbitrator before any decision could be given. Supporters of both sides carefully scanned proceedings, and a try was eventually allowed, the ball being 20 yards awav behind the goal-line, and thus well within the 25 yards limit. No goal resulted. There was no score in the second spell, though Huia once got over, the ball being held whilst ill the act. For a time, Huia pressed hard and • ’ooh.cd like scoring, but it all <m k-d fruitless, and then Sandon had their turn. The latter had Huia almost on their own goal line, when time Was called. For Sandon Thompson was the best man, while Pony Saville did a lot of graft for Huia. Both teams want to study the off-side rule, while Thompson (Sandon) and Davis (Huia) show an over eagerness to drag the ball from the scrum. This fault is a bad one and should be dropped. A ball must be thoroughly clear from the bacl-: rankers before it is playable. , , Mr Sutherland refereed, while J. Furrie and R. Hickson acted as line umpires. NOTES. No meeting of Sub-Union tonight. See local column. Fence scalers were numerous at yesterday ’s match. It is quite easy to walk through the gate, and besides you might rip your trousers if you risk the fence too much. Awahou play Orotia Bridge 011 Saturday next, the only Cup fixture. Mr O’Dea referee. It has come to our ears thatj a certain individual took delight in passing ' disparaging remarks about any decisions yesterday’s referee gave. Why was this ? we ask. Surely, there was 110 ground for prejudice, However, it is just as well the referee himself did not come within hearing of the evidently bigoted and misjudged remarks, and it may be well for the offender to confine his limited knowledge of the fine rules of the game to himself in future/ The sub-union authorities intend that all their referees shall be respected in future. We bear no animosity or prejudice to anyone, and ask that referees be treated likewise.
The following will represent •\waliou on Saturday :—Broad, foe, Jeffries, W. Robinson, Lambert. Reil, C. Robinson. J. and W. Coley, Shea Shea, Williams, S. Wright, Shadbolt, G. Robinson, and Spiers.
